SMU Cox FinTech Coalition Launches With MassChallenge

SMU Cox School of Business has announced the launch of the SMU Cox FinTech Coalition in partnership with MassChallenge, creating a platform intended to connect North Texas’ financial services industry with the founders, technologies and ideas shaping the future of fintech.

The Coalition builds on the depth of financial services already concentrated across North Texas and is designed to provide an ongoing environment where:

  • Financial institutions can engage with emerging fintech companies
  • Technology companies and founders can connect with industry participants
  • Investors can participate in fintech innovation
  • SMU alumni, faculty and students can engage with the ecosystem
  • New companies and talent can be attracted to North Texas

SMU Cox stated that the Coalition is intended to create an always-on platform rather than a single event or program, giving the region’s existing financial services community continuing opportunities to participate.

SMU Cox FinTech Accelerator

At the center of the Coalition is the SMU Cox FinTech Accelerator, powered by MassChallenge.

The Accelerator is a highly selective, four-month program that will recruit early-stage fintech startups from around the world.

Its hybrid format will combine:

  • Virtual work
  • Three in-person program moments in Dallas
  • Engagement with fintech experts
  • Connections with financial institutions
  • Access to investors
  • Opportunities to explore use cases and pilots

SMU Cox stated that the Accelerator provides a direct way to bring new fintech companies and talent into North Texas, while the broader Coalition creates the community around those companies.

Building Connections Between Founders and Financial Services

For participating founders, the initiative is designed to provide closer access to the financial services industry they ultimately need to navigate and sell into.

Participating companies will work with fintech experts, financial institutions and investors to:

  • Test use cases
  • Navigate the realities of selling into a highly regulated industry
  • Explore pilot opportunities
  • Build relationships with potential customers and partners

The Coalition therefore provides an environment where emerging companies can engage with established financial services participants while developing relationships around their technologies and business models.

Opportunities for North Texas’ Financial Services Community

The Coalition also creates opportunities for the financial services community already operating in North Texas.

According to the announcement, those opportunities include:

  • Engagement with emerging companies and technologies
  • Connections with founders and industry leaders
  • Participation in fintech innovation conversations
  • Opportunities for collaboration
  • Broader involvement from the SMU community

The Accelerator is the first major initiative within the Coalition, while the broader effort extends beyond an individual cohort or program.

Leadership Perspective

Joshua Taylor, Executive Director at SMU Cox School of Business, said the initiative is focused on connecting North Texas’ existing financial services capabilities with emerging fintech companies and talent.

“The financial services industry already has tremendous strength in North Texas. The opportunity now is to connect that strength more intentionally with the people building what comes next,”

Taylor added:

“The Accelerator gives us a way to bring exceptional fintech companies and talent into the region. The Coalition is how we build a community around them, giving founders, industry leaders, investors and the broader SMU community more ways to connect, participate and create value together.”

Cait Brumme, CEO of MassChallenge, said the Coalition extends beyond the Accelerator itself.

“What’s compelling about SMU’s vision is that it goes well beyond an accelerator,”

Brumme added:

“The Coalition builds on the extraordinary financial services strength already concentrated across North Texas and creates more ways for founders, industry and the broader community to connect around it. The Accelerator becomes a powerful part of that, bringing exceptional fintech founders from around the world into an ecosystem that already has so much to offer them.”

MassChallenge’s FinTech Experience

MassChallenge stated that it brings more than a decade of fintech experience to the partnership.

Its fintech program history includes:

  • More than 11,000 fintech companies that have applied to MassChallenge programs
  • More than 220 fintech companies accelerated
  • More than 500 financial services experts who have worked with participating founders
  • Five fintech alumni companies that have achieved unicorn status

Those alumni are Flywire, Bitso, Novo, Farther Finance and AlphaSense.

Building a Continuing North Texas FinTech Ecosystem

The Coalition and Accelerator are designed to create a reinforcing cycle connecting new fintech companies and talent with North Texas’ established financial services community.

The initiative is intended to:

  • Attract fintech companies and talent to North Texas
  • Connect emerging companies with the region’s financial services strength
  • Create opportunities for institutions, investors and entrepreneurs to participate
  • Engage the SMU community in fintech development
  • Give participants opportunities to shape what comes next

SMU Cox stated that it intends to expand these opportunities over time through additional convenings and ecosystem activity, with the goal of building a durable platform for fintech innovation with SMU at its center.

Applications Open October 6, 2026

Applications for the inaugural SMU FinTech Accelerator, powered by MassChallenge, open October 6, 2026.

Founders interested in the program can learn more about the Accelerator and register for an upcoming information session through MassChallenge’s SMU Cox FinTech Accelerator program.
